Our 2020 Summit features a panel of internationally acclaimed parenting educators who can help guide you to a place of calm and confidence. Your children are looking to you as their guide; this event will help you to be the parent who walks in with swagger and establishes a feeling of security for your family. Let’s do that!
Our 2020 line-up is made up of compassionate, funny, warm, and honest parenting educators from around the globe. What is Parenting 2.0?

Parenting 2.0 has evolved from getting children to comply and behave. We now know that when we focus on parenting from the inside out and grow the brains of children, we create the path for children to develop loving relationships, optimal health, and success in endeavours that are meaningful to them… and bonus… they will behave (when they can).

We accomplish this by meeting their primary attachment needs – when their hearts are safe, their brains will grow. We understand that as parents we will lead them firmly and kindly. We will provide for them so they can lean into us. We know that when we meet their dependence needs, we solicit their good intentions … and they will behave (when they can).

We realize that most of US do not “behave” in the way we’d like to as parents all of the time. We realize there is something missing between our intentions and actions. We tell ourselves that we will try to do better next time, and then before we know it, we’re caught up in the same old pattern.

Real-life couple Dr Vanessa Lapointe, R. Psych. and David Loyst, MSc have over 50 years of combined experience as professionals and parents. Hear what science and their experiences have taught them to create a revolutionary approach to parenting. Hear their stories of success and failure and what that has taught them about raising resilient children. Come join us for an interactive learning experience to understand the needs of your child, and to reflect on your parenting and the challenges you face. Leave with tools so that you can begin the journey to becoming the parent you’ve always wanted to be.

The Line Up

Dr Jody Carrington

Over the past 15 years, Dr. Jody Carrington has assessed, treated, educated and empowered some of our most vulnerable and precious souls on the planet. She is a child psychologist by trade, but Jody rarely treats kids. The answer lies, she believes, in the people who hold them. Especially when kids have experienced trauma, that’s when they need big people the most. Some of her favourites include educators, parents, first responders, and foster parents. Jody has shifted the way they think and feel about the holy work that they do.

Parent Superpowers

Once I became a parent, I realized I knew nothing about children and that parenting my hypothetical children was SO much easier then when they (finally) arrived! Here’s what I know to be true so far: it is the hardest job on the planet. And, there are a lot of opinions about how to do it “right”, but generally, nobody really knows what the hell they’re doing.

Here’s what I do know as a child psychologist: If you own a kid (or are helping to raise one), your #1 job is to teach them this thing called emotional regulation – how to stay calm in times of big emotion. Our babes will struggle to do well in this big-old world, doing well in school, making friends, having success in school, or being “happy”, unless they have some capacity to regulate emotion.  In order to show our babes how to regulate emotion, the kicker is we have to figure out how to model for them what calm looks like.  Turns out, just telling them to CALM DOWN doesn’t work for long, and neither does taking the things they love away so that they’ll eventually figure out that you want them to be kind.

In our parent talks, we often spend an evening together where you can expect laughter and stories, while we understand how attachment and connection to our babes and our partners will give our children the most important skill they will ever learn: How to be kind and connected people we can be proud of.

Calming Our Kids

It is so challenging for modern parents to create calmness, silence and stillness in their homes and the events of 2020 have amped up that challenge even moreso! In these exceptional times we’ve really seen what an important and inspirational life skill calmness is for our resilience as human beings. In this seminar, one of Australia’s favourite parenting authors Maggie Dent will explore the main causes of childhood stress, how anxiety can turn up in our homes and what we can do to prevent and manage it, especially while adults are more stressed too. This is a topic Maggie has been passionate about since she wrote her first book in 2003, Saving Our Children from Our Chaotic WorldMaggie argues that calmness can be learned and will give parents some simple, practical and immediately applicable skills that will bring more calmness into the home.

Plugged-in Parenting: How Your Family Can Flourish Online

The global health pandemic means parents, kids and teens are spending more time than ever tethered to technology. Our digital devices have become portals for leisure, learning and work. Now is the perfect time for us to examine our digital habits and ensure that our time online supports, not stiffles, our kids’ and our own physical health, mental wellbeing and focus. In this session you’ll learn simple, science-backed solutions to develop healthy and helpful digital behaviors (without suggesting that you digitally-amputate your family). Dr Kristy will share her 3B framework to help parents be the ‘pilot of the digital plane’ and will explain why your kids and teens (and let’s face it, you too) find technology so appealing (you’ll be armed with realistic strategies to tame techno-tantrums and disable digital distractions). Let Kristy help you ditch the guilt, grief and guesswork about screen time.

David Loyst

Here is what people have said about David Loyst. He is:

Hilarious, brash, wise, confrontational, kind, a genius and an idiot.

Come and find out for yourself. David has been studying and teaching about parenting for over 30 years as a Speech Language Pathologist and Autism Consultant … and has been practicing with his own children for more than 20 years. Mr. Loyst noticed that the common behaviourist parenting techniques of consequences and time-outs (that he initially advocated!!) did not work for the children he worked with or for his family. Instead they seemed to cause an increase in anxiety and stress, and a breaking down of relationships, ultimately leading to a shutting down of their social/emotional development. These observations led Mr. Loyst to the study of developmental attachment parenting and the implications for educational environments.

Beyond his professional practice, Mr. Loyst noticed as a parent that he didn’t always implement what he intended. He would catch himself suddenly doing or saying something to his children that he knew was not right. He was inspired by his own challenges to learn about the workings of his mind and how to care for himself so that he could truly lead and care for his children. Over the past 5 years David has continued to do his own inner work. As part of this he is a senior team member of the Work of Gila Golub, where he has supported hundreds of Gila’s clients to transform their personal challenges and create peaceful, loving relationships with their partners and their children.

Dr Vanessa Lapointe

Dr. Vanessa Lapointe is a mom, registered psychologist, parenting educator, best-selling author, international speaker, and a regularly invited media guest. Founder and director of The Wishing Star Lapointe Developmental Clinic, she has been supporting families and children for almost 20 years and has previous experience in community mental health and the school system. She is also a connoisseur of all things to do with stunning footwear.

While navigating the journey of parenting her own two children, including the restructuring of her family through divorce, Dr. Vanessa has been challenged to grow herself up. Rather than hiding behind the glossy façade, she acknowledges how much she is in the muck of it just like everyone else. From this awakened place she journeys along on a path that lands for herself and her family, all of which has profoundly changed her life and is a significant influence on her speaking and practice.

The Secret Code to Parenting & Life: SEE and HEAR

Imagine for a moment what it would be like to observe your child in the middle of a very loud, all out, public meltdown, and well and truly SEE and HEAR them. What would it be like for the internal workings of your child’s mind and soul to be the loudest message in that moment? How would you feel in seeing through it all to the truth of who your child actually is? How would your child feel?

Now apply that same idea of SEEing and HEARing to your partner who is observing this same meltdown and beginning to have a meltdown of his or her own. As they start raising their voice and threatening consequences, imagine sitting in that moment and seeing through the harsh words into the heart and soul of their being?

Now – wait for it – take that same idea one more time and apply it to YOU. Imagine if you saw your own perfectly imperfect inner workings – your anger, your fear, your guilt, your shame….whatever.  Rather than being overwhelmed and at the effect of these, what if you saw through it all to your peace.   Wouldn’t you then be able to step in with power and grace?

When any of us feels seen and heard it equates to an offering of love. Can you even fathom what would happen for your child, your partner and yourself if you created a world full of that? That’s what Dr. Vanessa and David will be talking about. And they think actually, if we all did this we would, in fact, change the world. So, how about we do do that?!
